Wisdom at Work: The Importance of Older and Experienced Nurse in the Workplace
Older nurses are more likely to stay on the job if they have flexible schedules and ergonomic workplaces, besides the incentives of good pay and attractive retirement plans, according to a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation-funded study. The report included results from a survey about nurses' job satisfaction and plans to leave an employer or the profession. Some 99% of the 377 nurses surveyed reported being satisfied or very satisfied with their job. However, 33% of nurses 40 or younger planned to stay with their employer, compared with only 12% of nurses older than 40. The survey was conducted at seven-hospital system Presbyterian Healthcare Services, Albuquerque, N.M., and had a response rate of 19%. Respondents identified pay, benefits and flexible schedules as the three most important incentives for staying.
